What's interesting here is not so much as to see a beautiful sight but as to note the result of the microbial action of the thermophilic Sulfolobus acidocaldarius. According to the sign posted here these bacteria consume the hydrogen sulfide gas escaping from below and convert it into sulfuric acid. The acid breaks the mountain's volcanic rock into clay, accelerating erosion. Thus, Sulfolobus acidocaldarius helps shape Roaring Mountain.
