According to the sign posted here these bacteria consume the hydrogen sulfide gas escaping from below and convert it into sulfuric acid. The acid breaks the mountain's volcanic rock into clay, accelerating erosion. Thus, Sulfolobus acidocaldarius helps shape Roaring Mountain.
